Rota — The “friendly island” between Guam and Tinian: one village on an isthmus, seabird cliffs, an ancient latte quarry and very clear water.
Tinian, Rota & the Northern Islands

Things to See in Rota

A village under a tiered mountain, a beach, a rock pool, a seabird cliff and a prehistoric quarry — all free, with a few wartime relics along the way.

The sights

Songsong village & Wedding Cake Mountain

Songsong occupies a slender neck of land between Sasanhaya Bay to the east and Sasanlagu to the west, with harbours on both sides. At its tip rises Mount Taipingot, whose stepped limestone terraces earned it the name Wedding Cake Mountain. The hill road behind the village has a lookout over the whole scene.

ℹ️ Free; the village is easy to walk in the cooler hours. The lookout is a few minutes’ drive uphill. Shops and restaurants keep short hours. Allow an hour or two.

Teteto Beach, Rota

Teteto Beach

Rota’s best-known beach, on the north-west coast: a curve of white sand with shallow, clear water over a reef flat and good snorkelling close to shore. Guata Beach is a little further along. On a weekday you may well be alone.

ℹ️ Free; about 10–15 minutes’ drive from Songsong on the road towards the airport. Simple shelters, no lifeguards and no shops — bring water and shade. Stay inside the reef.

The Swimming Hole, Rota

The Swimming Hole

A natural pool on the north shore, rimmed by rock and separated from the open sea by the reef. Waves washing over the reef keep it topped up with clear seawater, and on a quiet day it is like a sheltered saltwater bath with fish in it.

ℹ️ Free; reached by a short coral road. Calm days only — when surf is breaking over the reef the pool becomes dangerous. Reef shoes help on the rock. No facilities.

I Chenchon Bird Sanctuary, Rota

I Chenchon Bird Sanctuary

A viewing platform on the east-coast cliffs looks down into forest and ledges crowded with seabirds: red-footed and brown boobies, frigatebirds, and white-tailed tropicbirds drifting past at eye level. It is one of the most accessible seabird colonies in Micronesia.

ℹ️ Free and open; about 25–30 minutes’ drive from Songsong, partly on unpaved road. Best at dawn or towards dusk, when birds leave and return. Bring binoculars and keep to the platform and path.

As Nieves Latte Stone Quarry, Rota

As Nieves Latte Stone Quarry

Here the ancient Chamorro were cutting latte pillars and capstones out of the limestone when, for reasons unknown, the work stopped. The shafts and caps still lie in their pits — the largest known anywhere, which would have stood around seven to eight metres high if raised. The quarry is sometimes called the Taga quarry.

ℹ️ Free, unattended site in the north-east of the island, about 10 minutes from the airport. Do not climb on the stones. Allow 20–30 minutes; see our history and culture page for what latte stones were.

Tonga Cave

A large limestone cavern hung with stalactites at the edge of Songsong, a short climb up steps from the road. It served as a Japanese hospital during the war and has sheltered villagers from typhoons more than once since.

ℹ️ Free; a few minutes’ walk from the village. The floor is uneven and can be slippery — wear proper shoes and take a torch. Allow 15–20 minutes.

Japanese cannon & sugar-mill relics, Rota

Japanese cannon & sugar-mill relics

A Japanese coastal gun still sits in its emplacement on the hillside above Sasanhaya Bay, with a fine view of the anchorage it guarded. Near the harbour are the remains of the Nan’yo Kohatsu sugar mill and a small steam locomotive from the plantation railway, traces of the years when Rota grew cane for Japan.

ℹ️ Free, open sites beside the road east of Songsong and near the harbour. Combine them in half an hour. Do not climb on the gun or the locomotive.
