Season by season
Dry season (December–June)
The most dependable months: less rain, lower humidity and good visibility over the reef. Trade winds can ruffle the lagoon on some days but boats run most of the time. Expect more people around New Year, Lunar New Year and Golden Week.
Wet season (July–November)
Hot, humid and showery, with heavier rain at times. Many mornings are still bright and the water is at its warmest, but strong winds and squalls cancel crossings more often, and run-off after heavy rain can cloud the lagoon for a day or so.
Sea conditions & typhoons
Managaha lies inside the barrier reef, so the water is normally calm, at about 27–30 °C. When the wind is strong or a storm is passing the boats simply do not run, and the island closes. Typhoons are possible in any month and likeliest from about August to November; they have also damaged the island’s trees, facilities and coral in the past.

Festivals & events
- January–February: New Year and Lunar New Year are among the busiest weeks — book the boat a day or two ahead
- Late April–early May: Golden Week brings a short, sharp peak in visitors
- July: Saipan’s Liberation Day on 4 July and the school holidays make for full boats; go on a weekday morning if you can
- September–October: the Chuseok holiday is busy, and this is also the stormiest stretch of the year — keep your plans flexible
- Year-round: Carolinian community commemorations are sometimes held at the Chief Aghurubw memorial; give ceremonies space if you come across one
Our advice
The ideal visit is a weekday morning between February and June, on the first boat, outside the big holiday weeks. Check the wind forecast the evening before, and if it looks doubtful ask your hotel desk whether boats are running before you set off. Seasonal detail for the whole region is on the when to go page.
