When to Go to Northern Guam

Good all year for views; choose the drier months for hiking and the calmest days for the beaches.

Season by season

Dry season (December–June)

The most comfortable months for the Pagat trail and for walking at Ritidian, with lower humidity, a steady breeze and clearer evening skies at Two Lovers Point. Trade winds blow onto the east coast, so the western beaches such as Tanguisson are usually the calmer ones. Expect more people at the lookout in peak holiday weeks.

Wet season (July–November)

Hot, humid and showery, with the heaviest rain usually in the afternoon and overnight. Limestone drains quickly, so trails are less muddy than in the south, but the rock is slippery when wet and mosquitoes are worse. Sunsets between storm clouds can be the most dramatic of the year. Go out in the morning and keep plans flexible.

Sea conditions & typhoons

The northern coasts are exposed and have narrow reefs, so swell and currents are a concern in every season — more so when a storm is passing anywhere in the region. Typhoons are possible in any month and likeliest from about August to November; Ritidian in particular may stay closed for some time afterwards while the road and trails are cleared.

Festivals & events

  • February: Yigo’s village fiesta has traditionally been held around the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes (check dates locally)
  • July: Liberation Day on 21 July is marked island-wide; memorial observances are sometimes held at wartime sites in the north in the weeks around it
  • December: Dededo’s fiesta for its patron, Santa Barbara, usually falls early in the month (check dates locally)
  • All year: the Dededo Flea Market on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and sunset at Two Lovers Point every evening — a little before 18:00 in midwinter, nearer 19:00 in midsummer

Our advice

For hiking and for Ritidian, January to April is ideal — go on a weekday morning. For Two Lovers Point any clear evening will do; arrive 30–40 minutes before sunset to find parking and a place at the rail. Whatever the season, have a second plan ready in case Ritidian is closed.
