Things to See in Tumon & Tamuning

A beach district rather than a sightseeing one: the lagoon, two very different beach parks, the hotel strip and Tamuning’s shops.

The sights

Tumon Bay, Tumon & Tamuning

Tumon Bay

The reason the hotels are here: a broad lagoon of pale sand and clear, shallow water sheltered by a fringing reef. It has been a marine preserve since the late 1990s, so fish are plentiful and unafraid within a few metres of the shore.

ℹ️ Public beach, free and open at all times; public access paths run between the hotels. Fishing and taking shells or coral are restricted in the preserve. Stay inside the reef — currents are strong in the channels and beyond the reef crest.

Ypao Beach Park, Tumon & Tamuning

Ypao Beach Park

Officially Governor Joseph Flores Memorial Park, at the southern end of the bay: a big lawn shaded by palms and ironwood trees, picnic pavilions, an amphitheatre used for island festivals, and some of the best easy snorkelling in Tumon just off the sand.

ℹ️ Free. Car park, showers and toilets on site. Busiest on weekend afternoons when local families barbecue. Allow one to three hours.

Gun Beach & Fafai Beach, Tumon & Tamuning

Gun Beach & Fafai Beach

At the northern end of Tumon the road stops at a cove named after the rusting Japanese coastal gun still standing in the rock. A short path around the headland leads to Fafai Beach, quieter and backed by jungle, with Two Lovers Point high above.

ℹ️ Free. The path to Fafai is rough and partly tidal — wear proper sandals and go at low tide. The seabed is rocky; reef shoes help. Good at sunset.

Pleasure Island & Pale San Vitores Road, Tumon & Tamuning

Pleasure Island & Pale San Vitores Road

The central blocks of the hotel road are Guam’s main shopping and entertainment strip: duty-free galleries, The Plaza and other malls, a walk-through aquarium tunnel, restaurants from Chamorro barbecue to Korean and Japanese, and the show theatres.

ℹ️ Shops generally open from mid-morning until about 22:00–23:00; check individual venues. Guam adds no sales tax at the till. Evenings are liveliest.

Dinner shows & sunset cruises, Tumon & Tamuning

Dinner shows & sunset cruises

Evening on Guam traditionally means a show: fire dancers and Chamorro chants on the beach, or a big-stage production indoors, usually paired with a buffet or barbecue. Catamarans also leave before dusk for dinner under sail.

ℹ️ Most run nightly or several nights a week, starting around sunset; outdoor shows depend on the weather. Book ahead in peak weeks. See the tours page for listings.

Tamuning, Tumon & Tamuning

Tamuning

The working town behind the resort: Guam Premier Outlets and other shopping centres, supermarkets that never seem to close, local diners serving red rice and kelaguen, and — on its western shore — the quieter beaches of Agana Bay.

ℹ️ About 5–10 minutes from Tumon by car or shopping shuttle. Malls typically open about 10:00–21:00. A good place to stock up before driving round the island.
