Things to See in Saipan South & East

A summit, an ocean coast with no lagoon, and southern coves with wartime and ancient remains — spread out, and best linked by car.

The sights

Mount Tapochau, Saipan South & East

Mount Tapochau

Saipan’s highest point, at 474 metres, with an unobstructed view right round the compass: the lagoon and Managaha to the west, the surf-lined east coast, Marpi to the north and Tinian to the south. A small statue of Christ stands at the top, and a cross is carried up in procession at Easter.

ℹ️ Free and always open. The road from Capitol Hill is rough, rutted dirt — four-wheel drive or high clearance is strongly advised, and it worsens after rain. A short stair leads from the parking area to the summit. It is windy; mornings are usually clearest.

Forbidden Island, Saipan South & East

Forbidden Island

A craggy islet joined to the Kagman peninsula by a rocky causeway at low tide, protected as a bird sanctuary and marine conservation area. The clifftop lookout gives one of the great views of Saipan; a steep trail continues down to tide pools and a pool hidden in a cave.

ℹ️ Free. Lookout reached by road; the trail down takes about 30–40 minutes each way and is strenuous in the heat. Waves here are dangerous: go only at low tide in calm weather, never alone, with sturdy shoes and plenty of water.

Lau Lau Bay

A wide bay on the east coast — also written Laolao, and once called Magicienne Bay — that is Saipan’s main shore-diving and training site. Divers walk in across a reef flat with the help of fixed ropes to coral slopes where turtles and schooling fish are regularly seen.

ℹ️ Free. The access road is rough dirt, and there are no facilities at the shore. Entry and exit are tricky when there is swell; dive or snorkel with a local operator unless you know the site. Leave nothing in your car.

Old Man by the Sea

A weathered rock formation on a secluded east-coast beach near Talofofo that looks strikingly like an old man’s face in profile. Getting there is half the point: a jungle path winds down through forest to the sand.

ℹ️ Free. The trail takes roughly 20–30 minutes each way and can be muddy and overgrown — wear proper shoes and take water. The sea is rough and not suitable for swimming. The trailhead is not always well marked; ask locally.

Kagman & Tank Beach

The Kagman peninsula juts into the Pacific on Saipan’s east side. Tank Beach, also called Marine Beach, is a rugged strand of sand and rock with Japanese bunkers behind it and surf rolling in from the open ocean. Sea turtles nest here.

ℹ️ Free; no facilities. Strong currents and shore break make it a beach for walking and watching the waves, not for swimming. Keep clear of turtle nests and do not drive on the sand. A nearby lookout takes in the coast.

Obyan Beach, Saipan South & East

Obyan Beach

A quiet crescent of white sand on the south coast, facing Tinian. In calm weather the snorkelling and shore diving are good. Behind the beach stand a Japanese bunker from the Second World War and the remains of ancient Chamorro latte stones.

ℹ️ Free. Reached by a rough coral road beyond the airport — check your hire agreement. No facilities or lifeguards, and currents strengthen outside the reef. Do not climb on or move the latte stones.

Ladder Beach

A small cove beneath limestone cliffs on the south coast near the airport, named for the ladder that once gave the only way down; concrete steps have replaced it. Shallow caves in the cliff give welcome shade, and the outlook is straight across the channel to Tinian.

ℹ️ Free. Picnic shelters at the top. The beach is stony and waves can be strong, so it suits a picnic and a paddle more than a swim. Quiet on weekdays.
